On January 4, 2010, Jefferson's Department of Radiation Oncology will launch a pilot of a new survivorship program for its patients who have received breast cancer treatment.
Jefferson’s survivorship pilot program is unique to women who have received radiation therapy for breast cancer. In addition to assessing the status of the patient’s breast cancer, emphasis is placed on overall well-being. An extensive physical and psychosocial assessment will take place. Concerns and needs that are specific to a breast cancer survivor will be addressed.
“The number of patients living with a history of cancer continues to rise,” said Linda Ferguson, MSN, CRNP, who is the program’s coordinator. “Multiple studies have shown that patients who have survived cancer have different concerns than those who are currently receiving treatment.”
What makes Jefferson’s program unique among those offered at other institutions in the Philadelphia area is its multidisciplinary approach to survivorship care. Each patient who enrolls in the program will be given a survivorship team that includes experienced oncology clinicians and care providers -- a nurse practitioner, oncology-certified nurse and social worker.
